🧠 Browser Wars: Rise of the AI Machines!

The first browser wars were fought between Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, with Firefox and later Chrome entering the fray. But for years, that battle has felt long over. Most organisations settled on Chrome or Edge, managed them centrally, and moved on. The browser became a utility, a background tool.

But a seismic shift is happening. Artificial Intelligence is redefining how we browse, and it brings a host of new opportunities and risks that schools and organisations cannot afford to ignore.

📊 The Browser Landscape Is Changing

According to StatCounter, Google Chrome still dominates the global browser market with around 70 percent of users. Safari follows with roughly 14 percent, bundled as the default browser on iPhones, iPads and Macs. Edge maintains its share as the default on Windows, integrated tightly with Microsoft 365.

These browsers remain the mainstays of managed environments, offering stability and control. Yet a new generation of browsers, deeply integrated with AI, are fighting for supremacy, promising smarter, faster and more personalised browsing experiences.

In the past few weeks alone, OpenAI released Atlas and Perplexity launched Comet, signalling the start of a new era in how we experience the web.

Key Contenders Shaping This New Era

Atlas (OpenAI) – Released in October 2025, Atlas is built entirely around ChatGPT. It follows you across the web, understands what you’re viewing and helps complete tasks without leaving the page. Atlas can remember context from past interactions and includes an early preview of agent mode, allowing ChatGPT to take actions on your behalf while keeping sensitive sites protected.

Comet (Perplexity) – Now available worldwide, Comet is designed to browse with you. Its built-in assistant appears in every tab, ready to answer questions, perform tasks and help you get things done faster. Perplexity describes it as a shift from searching the web to actively doing things on it, making curiosity a central part of the experience.

Dia (The Browser Company) – The successor to Arc, Dia is being developed as a fully AI-native browser focused on understanding and simplifying information. It aims to help users interpret the web rather than just display it.

Google Chrome with Gemini – Google is integrating its Gemini model directly into Chrome to help users write, summarise and automate tasks. It’s initially rolling out to US users in English as Google embeds AI more deeply into its core products, transforming Chrome into an intelligent productivity tool that anticipates user needs.

Microsoft Edge with Copilot – Edge continues to evolve with Copilot built into the sidebar. It allows users to chat, draft text and analyse content without leaving the page, aligning closely with Microsoft 365’s AI-driven ecosystem.

Collectively, these browsers signal a shift from passive viewers to active assistants, each competing to become the AI users trust most.

🧩 Enter Agent Mode

The next leap for AI browsers is agent mode, where the browser performs multi-step tasks automatically, such as booking meetings, comparing prices or drafting emails.

OpenAI’s Atlas already includes early testing of this capability, while Perplexity’s Comet is experimenting with similar features. Google and Microsoft are expected to follow with Gemini and Copilot as all major players race to build autonomous assistants inside the browser.

This shift moves the browser from reactive to proactive. For individuals, it could mean serious productivity gains. For organisations, it raises new questions about privacy, autonomy and accountability.

When an AI agent starts acting independently online, who’s really in control?

⚠️ Can We Really Trust the Machines?

As powerful as these AI browsers are, they remain fallible. Every major AI tool can misread context or even fabricate information, a phenomenon known as hallucination.

The disclaimers are clear for all to see:
“ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info.”
“Gemini can make mistakes, including about people, so double-check it.”

When those same systems act independently through agent mode, the stakes rise. A misunderstood command could trigger the wrong action or share information unintentionally. In education and enterprise environments, where accuracy and accountability are critical, that’s a serious concern.

Before trusting AI browsers to make autonomous decisions, organisations must ask whether the technology is mature enough and whether staff are equipped to validate what it produces.

🏢 Implications for Schools and Organisations

For schools, trusts and organisations, this shift introduces both opportunity and risk.

Browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge remain the only ones with mature enterprise management frameworks. Chrome can be managed through the Google Admin Console, while Edge can be configured via Group Policy or Intune, giving administrators visibility and control over updates, extensions and security settings.

AI browsers, however, are currently designed for consumers. They offer little or no administrative control, which means filtering, monitoring and compliance tools may not function as expected. For schools, this directly impacts compliance with the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) guidance, which requires effective filtering and monitoring. For all organisations, it raises broader data protection concerns, as AI assistants often analyse visible on-screen content. If confidential information such as MIS records, safeguarding logs or staff data is processed externally without authorisation, it could constitute a data breach under GDPR.

To remain compliant and protected, only enterprise-grade systems such as Gemini for Education or Microsoft Copilot for Education should be used. Consumer-grade AI browsers must not be deployed in environments that process or access sensitive data until enterprise versions become available.

Until then, pilot projects should remain limited and tightly controlled, ensuring any use of AI browsing aligns with safeguarding, data protection and organisational policy.

💭 Why This Matters

In education and beyond, the browser is the gateway to almost everything: learning platforms, admin systems, cloud tools and safeguarding filters.

As AI begins to live inside that browser and even act on behalf of users, it changes how people interact with information and how organisations must manage it. There’s enormous potential to support learning, accessibility and productivity, but it also introduces new complexities that cannot be ignored.

AI is powerful but far from perfect. Even the most advanced models make mistakes, which is why human oversight and digital literacy must remain central. Each interaction with AI contributes to a growing dataset that helps train future models, meaning every user trades a degree of privacy for convenience. We must ask how much freedom and privacy we are giving away in exchange for speed, efficiency and personalisation.

This is not just a technical issue, it is a cultural one. Schools and organisations have a duty to ensure that only compliant, safeguarded and transparent systems are used. Clear policies, stronger digital literacy and responsible governance will be critical to ensuring that innovation never compromises privacy, trust or child safety.

The browser wars may be back, but this time the fight is not for speed or simplicity. It is for intelligence and data.

We are standing at the edge of a major shift in how we experience the web. And as the battle for our attention moves from search engines to browsers, one thing is certain: whoever controls the browser, controls the future.
